Petrel: The ideal backdrop for photo shoots, can be trailer'd to your studio year-round, or during summer, executive cruises for two in the Hamptons or New York harbor!
Petrel, built by the legendary manufacturer Century, in 1951, is a classic high powered “runabout” with origins beginning around 1890-1910. Early pioneers of these speedboats were often involved in racing or attempting to break water speed records. They built their own boats and their racing success brought market demand. In those days, the “gay 90’s,” there was a lot of money for toys. By the end of World War II, these glam boats were popping up in the exclusive resort lakes around the USA and Europe. Well-known firms were Gar Wood, Hacker Craft and later, Century, and Chris-Craft.
Century and Chris-Craft took this style of boat to further levels of performance and elegance.
The rounded ‘barrelback’ stern initially became popular in the 1930’s. Chris-Craft in particular making several hundred; many of which still exist. (and change hands for very many times their original price)
PRIVATE CHARTERS ON PETREL -- ON-LOCATION INFO
Petrel is available for private, captain'd charters on a half-day and full day basis, with prices starting at $600 per hour, including the skipper. Two to four people may be aboard. Fuel surcharges apply. (Sorry, we do not rent this boat out without the skipper.)
Petrel is most popular as a background, or prop vessel, for use in films and product photography. Uniquely, location managers find Petrel of great value because the boat can be transported into studios for all-weather or climate and lightning controlled environments. This makes her ideal for summer product advertising and roll outs scheduled months in advance and shot during the fall and winter. Rates are on a half-day basis and transportation charges may apply.
Petrel was restored over 4 years by Steen Melby, in Patchogue, New York. Steen also heads the Long Island chapter of the Classic and Antique Boat Society. His fine hand and highly skilled, modern construction techniques have resulted in his work being showcased in national boat shows and competitions.
Petrel has been hired for photoshoots, as an escort vessel for weddings, and film use. She can carry two couples and her captain at a hurtling 40 knots in flat water!!!!!!!!!!!
